Malta's Granting of Citizenship for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment Regulations (S.L. 188.06), under the Maltese Citizenship Act Cap. 188, LN437 of 2020, provides a pathway for foreign individuals and their families to become naturalized citizens, contributing to the country's economy.
The Malta Citizenship by Naturalisation for Exceptional Services by Direct Investment process is a 36-month (or, by exception, 12-month) residence program. It offers an opportunity for foreign individuals and their families to obtain citizenship, provided they contribute to the country's economy.
Maltese citizenship comes with numerous benefits, including visa-free travel to over 180 destinations, access to a transparent financial center, and an excellent jurisdiction for international business. It's an appealing place to live or own a second home, strategically located with fantastic air links.
To qualify for this program, applicants must be at least 18 years old, make a significant financial contribution, purchase or lease a residential property in Malta, make a donation to a registered NGO or society, and reside in Malta legally for at least 36 months (or 12 months, by exception).
The application process includes submitting the necessary forms, fees, and documents. Applicants must pass due diligence checks. If successful, they must fulfill the investment, donation, and property requirements. After the minister's decision on granting Maltese citizenship, the successful applicant will take an oath of allegiance in Malta.
Malta does not impose any restrictions on dual citizenship.
The investment is EUR 738,000 for a minimum residence period of 36 months or EUR 888,000 for a minimum of 12 months (including property lease). Applicants must hold Maltese residence status for a minimum of 36 months (or 12 months in exceptional cases) before applying for citizenship.
